Life in the Front Line

British soldiers eating

Even though food was very short in Britain during World War One, families often sent parcels to their fathers and brothers fighting at the front. The parcels contained presents of chocolate, cake, tobacco and tinned food.

At the beginning of the war, soldiers got just over one pound of meat, the same amount in bread and eight ounces of vegetables each day.

Some soldiers worked in field kitchens which were set up just behind the trenches to cook meals for the soldiers who were fighting.

By 1917 the official ration for the average British 'Tommy' was much smaller. Fresh meat was getting harder to come by and the ration was reduced to just 6 ounces of 'bully beef' (which we call corned beef today). Soldiers on the actual front line got even less meat and vegetables than this.

'Maconchie's meat stew' and hard biscuits was a meal that many soldiers ate. Sadly, the meat was mostly fat. This, along with a shortage of fresh fruit and vegetables, was responsible for many soldiers to suffer from upset stomachs!

What do you think about the text?

  1. As my point of view this text is interesting because it shows how was the life for the soldiers who fought in the first world war. They live in miserable conditions. In addition, they didn´t have covered a basic human necessity such as the food.

  2. In my opinion, the text is interesting because it explains the standard of living on the First World War and how difficult it is to obtain the food necessary to enable them to fight the war. Soldiers fought whole days and although they recived food from their homes, they didn´t have covered a basic human necessity like the food. In the first world war occurs as in other wars, if soldiers stay more time fighting, they have less quality of food.

  3. Well, in my opinion, no basic needs were covered, so they died from hunger, ilnesses and war. The text tries to reflect the leak of food for getting about everything else, so I think it is a fragment. Also it is very realistic.

  5. From my pont of view the First World War was one of the worst war in the world but this useful document shows you that soldiers in this war didn't only die because of bullets, they also died because of illneses, the necessity of aliments and the low budgets in the war.

In my opinion, the text reflects us the poor conditions of the soldiers nutrition, and show us that countries spent most of the money in obtain the best arsenal but they didn´t take care in the health of the soldiers, so the die for hunger and ilnesses occupied a large percentage.

  7. I think it's a very "sad" text because it is difficult to see all the needs of hunger and health passing soldiers and cared more for winning the war and on the other hand I think it's very interesting

This text show us what a soldier life was like. In my opinion, they live in miserable conditions, and it had to be very hard for them to be fighting all day and also seeing their friends dying in a War, without having enough food and being unhealthy. I think a lot of them would have died of hunger, so it is very sad.

  9. In my opinion, I think this is very interesting text that shows the poor conditions in which people lived during World War II. People did not eat enough and the food is very important for people, for this reason many soldiers suffered during the war.

  10. I think this text is a little sad but interesting because it shows how soldiers' life was on the First World War. It show us that one of the reasons of dying was hunger not always by shots. From my point of view this text is a good lessons for showing that people that can eat everytime they want to, are very lucky and not everyone can presume of this "luxury"

  12. To my mind, this text is very useful because it show us how soldiers conditions' were in the World War. I think soldiers were brave because they had to endure hunger and the illnesses it carried along with it. Thus, their way to be in the trenches were more difficult adding their lack of food. Few soldiers were able to survive in that standard of living.

  13. I think that be soldier was very hard because: first you have to fight against your enemies but if you add to all this suffer the act that you dont eat correctly and the food didnt have much quality. But with this text we can learn how people lived on the First World War and also we can learn that the quality of the food can be another reason for death.

  14. This text is more about food in thenches than life there, so what I mostly found interesting in this text were the conditions of food there. They didn't have so much to eat and they had to do a lot of exercise so maybe a lot of people couldn't survive.

in my opinion this text is interesting because it shows you the difficult to obtain food in the first world war, the quality of the food that was terrible and how the soldiers could qet sick of stomach easily. This text also show how the soldiers fight every day with a bad nutrition

  17. I think that in a war that is a common thing , the people who went to the war knew where they were going and the things they had to face there . Having less rations of food or having food in bad state is another problem people have to suffer when going to the war but there are many others and even worse ones.

  18. I think that it is amazing how people was figthing for their country and they couldn't eat a good meal but I understand that it probably was caused by economic problems due to the war.

From my point of view the text it's interesting because it shows you how hard was life for the soldiers during the war.
I think it was cruel for them because they didn't have enough energy to go fighting.

I think this shows how soldiers eat at the battlefronts and how bad they eat.
Nowdays soldiers (from USA as an example) have "first aids meal" which are small boxes which contain different types of meals which can be consumed everywhere and don´t need to be cooked (turron, tinny food, ...).

In my opinion, it was really unfair to soldiers because when the government was searching for soldiers, they weren't said anything about that conditions.
At least they would have to eat quality food. If the governement didn't have money to feed them, don't call them to go to war.

Well I dont have a excactly opinion, In one hand the text is very interesting, I learn how the soldiers do and eat in the trenches but in the other hand is very unfair how the generals or theis boss dont put any attention in theirs soldiers, the state of the meat or their wealth.

  23. It is a very interesting text because you can see that the soldiers had not food and the families who were proud of their soldiers took some food like chocolate , cakes , tobacco and tinned food for them.
